Fabulous Announcement: Crafty Girls Workshop has a HOME!

Miz Crafty Girls Workshop (me) has been busy lately because of a very special Work in Progress (NO it's not a baby!) I have a STUDIO space! Yes, I've done it, I signed a lease and it's official, Crafty Girls Workshop has a HOME! If I wasn't so tired and if I could find my camera, I'd post pictures of it, maybe tomorrow. But I've been going to my studio EVERY day after work and putting in many hours to move all the inventory over there and set it up JUST SO so that it's perfect when anyone wants to stop by to take a class or a private lesson or have some studio time. In the meanwhile, the online shop is still OPEN FOR BUSINESS and I've also managed to list somewhere around 20 bolts of fabric in the last few days. I've also rearranged things a little bit over there. I spent most of Sunday adding main category sections for Collection, Manufacturer and Designer. I hope you'll go take a look because I think the arrangement makes A LOT more sense now. You can even view fabrics that sort of go together based on a Theme or Print, such as Dots or Stripes, Graphic or Novelty. There is even a separate section just for Collection>Bella Solids AND Theme/Print> Tonal/Solids. I hope you'll let me know what you think of the new arrangement. Maybe drop me a line by filling in the contact us form on the website or leave a comment on this post. It's sort of fun, like rearranging furniture, you know? But don't worry, I think this is an arrangement I'm going to stick with for awhile.

Check out this awesome book I just got in today! It's from the incredibly talented ladies at Stitch Lounge in San Fransisco which is a hip and fun sewing lounge where you can go in and rent a sewing machine and make all sorts of fun projects! (Someday I'm going to have a place like that here in San Antonio, I think). These ladies crammed soo much great stuff into this book! I just scanned through the projects and they describe tons of awesome ways to take items you find at THRIFT stores and turn them into trendy boutique style clothing! You can take an old prom dress or bride's maids dress and turn it into a halter top! Or even take a funky buckle from an ugly purse and use it for a cool bracelet! There are soo many ideas and along the way you'll learn the greatest techniques for dressmaking (or garment making). I mean, you'll learn how to measure, fit, gather, ruffle, stitch, rouche, buttonhole, darn, zigzag, and the list goes on. Even if you make some of the projects and decide not to wear them, you'll still be more experienced in the end. And the first project? Making a Ms. Double Trouble Dressform out of Duct Tape!! This book is a veritable SEWING COURSE in just one book. Plus, it fits in flat rate envelope so you get it for less than retail even after shipping! Bunny Hill Designs, Oliver + S Patterns, and New 12 Days of Christmas Fabric Now in Stock!

New Patterns  New Yardage

We just received several new patterns from Bunny Hill Designs that were recently released at quilt market. We are completely in LOVE with her premier fabric line called Lily and Will (sneak peek here) due to arrive in October, but we snatched up these patterns right away to help you plan for your fabric purchases! Haha, actually, we just LOVE these patterns so much and see so many possibilities with them that we wanted to make them available right away! Not only are there several new Bunny Hill patterns, but Oliver + S had a couple of sweet little girl patterns that would be perfect for summer and all the way into the fall! Anne Sutton from Bunny Hill and Liesl from Oliver + S must have been in cahoots before Quilt Market because look at this version of the Sunday Brunch Jacket is so adorable! We have the cream quilted fabric ON ORDER because we think it would be AMAZING in this pattern (oh and with the blue plaid/checker TOO CUTE!)

Now as for that funny Christmas fabric in the middle of the mosaic up there, what IS that!? Well, it's the yardage we've purchased to coordinate with our precuts of Kate Spain's newest line called 12 Days of Christmas. Yes, it's getting to be that time when we need to start thinking about Christmas, ugh.

Here is a little bag that Regina just finished working on using an Aster Manor Charm Pack. Isn't it lovely? It has a drawstring top and a nice strap, plus pockets on the inside for your hard to find items. It is quilted together and a great bag for a grab and go Saturday trip to the market or a day on the town. This tote bag is listed in our Etsy shop as a finished item for sale. Perfect for a birthday (or Christmas) gift or gift for yourself!

Freebird Bag

Here is another one, made with the same pattern but using a Freebird charm pack instead. These bags are fully lined with coordinating fabric and would make a great addition to any wardrobe. I think Friday is the official start of Quilt Market but if you check out those designer's blogs you'll get some sneak peeks into their new fabric lines. I've tried to put them all in one easy to find place for you over there in the left sidebar. But I really wanted to shout out about something new I just discovered.

Check out this totally COOL and as far as I can tell, FREE magazines for hip, modern women! I love that their tag line is "Live like you mean it." How appropriate is that!? And do you know how I found out about them? Somehow they decided to follow little ol' Crafty Girls Workshop on Twitter! It turns out that the editer of this e-zine happens to enjoy sewing and quilting! Go figure! Well, this is such an awesome zine that I can tell it's going to be a super big hit! I highly recommend you check it out and be sure you have some coffee (or tea or your beverage of choice) and a long quiet block of time because you'll get lost in the beautifully laid out pages and well written articles. This magazine has substance, really! So, please check it out and I hope you'll tell your friends. Hey, it's free! What do you have to lose?

In other news, I've been adjusting to my second full week at my new job and have noticed that my free time for sewing has been dramatically reduced! I used to spend the week keeping up the house and working on the shop and then found time in the evenings and weekend to sew but now my evenings are almost gone by the time I get home and my weekends have been spent playing housekeeping catch up. Does that sound familiar to anyone? True Confessions of a Crafty Blog-aholic

Hello, my name is Anna and I am ADDICTED to crafty blogs! So I finally figured out how to use Google Reader. Not that I didn't really know how to use it, just that I forgot it existed. Turns out ALL the blogs I've ever chosen to follow for ANY reason whatsoever have been logged on my Google Reader account! That means that when I log in to my account I can see them, ALL the Crafty Blogs I've sorted into the Crafty Blogs group are now nicely organized and I can read new post after new post after new post and go on a linky crafty world spree! So, I was working on reading all the 300+ NEW posts (seems I forgot about it again for a day or two) and in the mean time I found oh, four or five NEW blogs to add to my reader! That means that for every two or three new posts I actually read, I was adding another new blog with more NEW posts! Crazy!! Now, it's a good thing I'm doing this at the odd hours of the morning because if it was during the day I would REALLY feel like I was wasting time. But at this time of the morning, when the dogs are sleeping, hubby is sleeping, it's just me and the world of crafty blogs, hmm, I can get lost in inspiration!

But wait...There's MORE!

I have another confession:

I was organizing the shelves where I store most of my fabric and projects and I FOUND fabric I actually FORGOT I had! Is that horrible!? (Or just normal for a fabric-a-holic like me) I actually FOUND a few layer cakes from lines I REALLY love! I also found some charm packs and lots of patterns I had sort of just stuffed on the shelf for some odd reason. So, now that I've finished with folding the bigger pieces of fabric, I'm working on the declutter and actually sorting stuff in my Spring Studio Spruce Up. I hope that very soon I'll have some pictures to show you of my uber organized Spruced Up Sewing Space.

Spring Spruce Up: Progress Report

Well, I really wanted to draw a "winner" from the people who posted their links or commented on last Saturday's blog, but since it was just a small group, I've decided that you are ALL winners! IF you are just joining us today, no problem! I'm going to do a BIG drawing at the end of the spruce up and I'm going to give you an extra entry for each comment on blog posts between last Saturday and May 1 (the end of the Spruce Up). SO there is still time to join in!

MY Progress Report:

I've drunk the fabric folding kool-aid (you know that already if you've watched my view-torial) and I LOVE it! I DON'T love having to re-press all my fabric again, but it's worth it to be able to get much more fabric on a shelf! That means, MORE room for MORE fabric!! Have you drunk the fabric folding kool-aid and tried it out? If so, please tell me and if you'd like to send me a picture, I'll post it on THIS blog. Before and afters are great, but just afters are great too.

I also tried to ribbon storage idea of wrapping ribbons on wooden clothes pins and storing them in jars. I LOVE it! Yes, I had to hunt around town for those wooden clothes pins (NOT the kind with the wire thingy) and then I had to actually wrap the ribbon the pins, but it was fun and since I don't have an overwhelming amount of ribbon, I think it looks pretty cool.

Other than that, not much else has happened on the storage spruce up front. I went to a wholecloth quilting class on Thursday and these are the fabrics I brought for my quilt. They are from Meadowsweet by Sandi Henderson (and yes, we have them in the shop!) The big flower is one side (1 1/2 yd) the pink flowerish pattern is the other side (1 1/2 yd) since it's a wholecloth quilt there isn't ANY piecing involved! All we did was bring it to the class already sandwiched with the batting (I used fusible, which I LOVE) and then she showed us how to do this really cool technique to quilt it which ends up looking like PLAID!! I'll have to show you when I get it done. I have to bring it already quilted to class next Thursday so we can put the binding on, which I'm going to use the orangy-pink fabric and we'll add a piping, I'm using the stripe. FUN, FUN! Oh, and I get to use ALL the threads I have in the picture, that's the fun part!

Spring (Studio) Spruce Up (part two): Sort and Organize

Why is it that the entire feel of a room can change if you change the name? If I call a room my sewing space or sewing room, it feels normal and sort of plain, but if I call it my Sewing Studio that completely changes the feel for the room! Just a random thought to start off my post about organizing.

You know, in honor of Earth Day this Thursday (April 22nd) I think it makes sense to be sprucing up our studios or some part of our homes. It's a perfect time to air out your linens that have been stored away in favor of heavier blankets, and to rexamine the items in your home/sewing space. I figured out how to do a mosaic! Here's a great website for that.

I found some totally cute storage cubes (collapsible) at DOLLAR TREE!

All of these for just $5 total! And they match my room colors, isn't that too cute?! The rectangle ones have dividers on the inside I think those will be perfect for organizing small notions and the others will be great for FQs and precuts.

Spring (Studio) Spruce Up Inspiration (part one)

I'm not sure why, but I'm a super insomniac tonight and you get to benefit from it! I've been blog hopping and found some great ideas and inspiration for sewing rooms. Did you know there is a group on Flickr just for pictures of Craft Rooms (a small group of only 4,330 members!) AND Sewing Rooms (over 1000 pictures!) If you just go and type "sewing rooms" in the search box it finds all sorts of great pictures!



Hmm, I have some more ideas but I think I'll save those for tomorrow's post, I can't wait! Spring Studio Spruce Up Challenge

Yeah, it's not very pretty, but here are some pictures of my Sewing Space currently. Actually, I've moved my sewing machine downstairs because my sewing space is so cluttered that I can't think in there and would rather work downstairs! Plus, it's easier to let my dog in and out all day if I'm not running up and down the stairs (need to get a doggy door).

Basically, my work space is a mess! I have the luxury of having an entire room dedicated to a creative space but yet I've moved my mess downstairs, hmm, seems sort of contradictory, don't you think? So my challenge to myself, and you if you choose to accept it, is to spruce of my sewing space for Spring! Then I can really get in there and work on some exciting projects and not feel like my hobby/business is taking over the dining room!

Here is where I plan to gain some inspiration, this AWESOME magazine we have listed for an AMAZING deal, called Studios. See where it says "storage solutions for every artist"? That's exactly what I need! We only have 4 more copies available and since this is last years' issue, we've knocked $2 off the price! Crafty Girls Hit the Road

Regina and I are heading out today to Dallas to a mini retreat near the Moda warehouse. (We get to stay in a hotel, thankfully) We're going to learn some awesome ideas from famous people such as Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree quilts fame as well as other who will teach us to make our business even better. Due to our road trip, we won't be able to process or ship any orders until Monday April 12, but we will have access to e-mail to answer any questions you may have. And as I alluded to yesterday, I have two guest blog posts lined up, one from Gabrielle at Bee Wise Bags and the other from Shayne at Orabelle Baby (see links in sidebar). Design Wall Update

Last weekend I had a wonderful opportunity to go out to Regina's house to sew for two whole days! Of course, while we're sewing, we're also discussing Crafty Girls business, so it's sort of a business meeting at the same time (cool, huh?) I wanted to show off one of the quilts I worked on, it was a super productive weekend since I made significant progress on two quilt tops. First, I spent most of that week working on a Two by Fours quilt. This quilt pattern is awesome (and we happen to have it in the shop) because it just uses a jelly roll, the ENTIRE jelly roll, all the strips cut into two sub units. Then piece those together and make it into the top! Then add a small inner border and wide outer border and you have a VERY nice sized quilt. Well, I had cut my Portobello Market jelly roll into the specified pieces in preparation for a quilt retreat, hmm, LAST year, and put them into a zip lock baggy. I never got around to sewing the pieces together until last week. Each evening, I worked on the various units and by the end of the week, I had the ENTIRE top (except the borders) complete! This might have been mentioned in the post about listening to books on tape or watching Netflix/Hulu and here is the top all done!

Aren't those fabrics pretty? I really wish that jelly roll was still available and the yardage too! I hoping that when we go to the Moda Retreat tomorrow we'll be able to find some yardage I can use for borders. I mean, we'll only have the ENTIRE warehouse available to search in! I also have a Martinique Jelly Roll and can't wait to make this same quilt from that JR!

Crisis Averted, Please Return to your Regularly Scheduled Shopping

Wow, this is what it feels like panic when you realize that your SHOPPING CART SOFTWARE is DOWN! We were wondering why we hadn't had any orders in TWO DAYS. Lately, that's pretty unusual. Well, I chalked it up to the Easter Holiday weekend. Perhaps people are too busy with their families to shop for fabric right now. Totally understandable. Then tonight, I was listing some AMAZING new fabric bundles we've created (I had loads of fun taking pictures yesterday) and I decided to test the shopping cart, but it wouldn't load! PANIC! Long story short, somehow I read a forum post that explained how to change the address and it corrected the problem. I felt a little better knowing it wasn't JUST my site that was down, it was happening to all 20,000 of the users of Mal's e-commerce. Note to self, if something seems unusual, it probably is an indicator that something is not RIGHT. OK, so our store is working now, please return to your regularly scheduled shopping. And would you like to see some fabric eye candy?? (I hope I don't get spammed for that)

We just received a GIANT order of patterns and I finally got them ALL listed in our shop! Go check them out and while you're there, consider one of those pillowcase kits.
