Pillowcase Tutorial!!

Yes, it's finally time. The pictures are all ready and the instructions are written. Here is the LOOOONG awaited pillowcase tutorial, created by Regina (the rather silent Crafty Girl). At the end of this post I'll include a link to open a PDF of this tutorial so you can save and print it and keep it close to your sewing machine (mine is in a different room from my computer.) That way you'll always have a quick go-to project for fast gifts. By the way, the fabric used in the pictures is Oz by Sanae! We have a lot of it in our shop in various colors for many tastes. We also have a KIT available, just tell us your fabric choices (anything from our shop) and we'll cut it and ship it to you right away!

Easy Peasy Pillowcase Tutorial

Materials Needed:

3/4 yd for case

1/4 yd for band

1/8 yd for accent band

1-1/4 yd lace (optional)

Fold the pillowcase fabric in half and straighten the edges. Remove the selvage from the edges of all the fabrics. The selvage is the tightly woven edge that is either white with the name of the fabric or may be the same color as the fabric but has very small holes along the length of it.

Step 1: Fold the fabric for the 2 bands in half lengthwise (wrong sides together) and press.

Step 2a: If you are using lace, draw a line 1/4" away from the raw edge of the accent band (lengthwise).

Step 2b: Pin your lace directly below this line. The header of the lace should be touching the line. Sew in place.

Step 3: Line up the raw edges of the accent band (with lace) and outer band, pin, and sew the accent band to the outer band using 1/2" seam allowance. (picture below)

Step 4: Lay pillowcase fabric out flat, right side up. Line up the raw edges of the band piece and the pillowcase body. Accent band and optional lace will be sandwiched between. Sew together with a 1/2" seam allowance. If you have a walking foot, this is a good time to use it. Trim the seam allowance to about 1/4" and finish the edge with a zigzag stitch over the edge of the fabric (this prevents fraying).

Step 5: Fold the entire unit in half lengthwise and pin together. Take special care to match-up the seams on the band section. Sew together using a 1/2" seam allowance.

Step 6: Trim the seam and zigzag stitch over the raw edge. Turn right side out and push out the corners. Press.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You now have a pretty pillowcase for your bed!

How Do You Feel About Advertising?

OK everyone, this is a feedback post, I REALLY need some feedback here. PLEASE leave me a comment with your opinion about this.

How do you feel about a blog that allows people to advertise on their site? Regina and I are considering offering this option here on the Crafty Girls Workshop blog. It wouldn't be a high cost thing, and we'd make sure that we only allow people to advertise who sell/make items that are relevant to what our readers want and, of course, don't compete with what we sell. That's part of the reason I need your feedback. It might seem a little over the top to ask people to pay for us to add their button to our blog, especially since we already sell fabric and kits and patterns but I want to offer people the option. Perhaps you're a reader of this blog and you LOVE to sew but have NO idea how to make cute jewlery, why not let us provide an image that links to a webstore of someone who sells pretty jewlery? Do you see where I'm going with this? So, hit me, tell me what you think, yeah or nay about advertising and IF you are someone who would be INTERESTED in advertising on here, please let me know as well. Of course, it would be sort of a let down if we went to all this trouble and no one wanted to advertise with us. Believe me, it's going to be VERY inexpensive to start, probably $5 a month! Most of our advertising budget goes to purchasing ad space on various blogs and we've paid anywhere from $10 to $85 a month for those ads, so I believe that $5 a month is VERY reasonable. I'll also do my best to help drive more traffic here so you get maximum exposure.

One more point: By asking for help with sponsoring our blog by purchasing some ad space, it will help us generate a little bit of money to be able to pay for ad space on other blogs. This will help us keep our prices on fabric, patterns and kits low and fair. We aren't doing this because we're greedy, but we do need to keep our ads on other sites running and hopefully we can do that and help promote some great crafty people in the process!

Our Webstore: Cool Feature

I just figured out how to add a really cool feature to our webstore! Can you see what is circled in the example above? (For a closer look, click the picture to go straight to the webstore.) It's cutting options! How does it work? Let's say you want to make a Quilter's Quarters twirly skirt, which calls for 4 fat quarters. Well, it's soo easy to get exactly what you need without a lot of back and forth complicated chat. Just find the four fabrics you like and choose the radio button next to Fat Quarter $2.75. Then, in the Qty box just below the buttons, enter how many you'd like and click Order. Usually for FQs you'll just want one at a time. Do that for the four fabrics you like and then check out (don't forget to purchase the pattern and any additional yardage). The shopping cart program will automatically calculate the price and tell us you want Fat Quarters! Isn't that awesome?! You can do the same thing for 1/2 yard or 1 yard cuts! That is the beauty of our webstore, a pleasant shopping experience (we hope). OK, yes, I'll admit, I'm a computer geek and figuring out how to do something like adding the option to choose cutting choices seems like a cool feature. I have to admit though, that the Shoppe Pro webstore system makes things really easy (and I don't get any extra credit for saying that either). Cute Skirt SAMPLE Just Listed

This cute skirt, size 3T is now available on our Etsy shop for sale! Isn't it adorable!!? This is our shop sample for picture purposes and is the ONLY ONE! Regina used the Quilter's Quarters skirt pattern (which we have available in sizes 1-3 yrs or 4-6 yrs) and the Meadowsweet line of fabrics. The patterns and the fabrics are listed on our webstore if you'd like to purchase the supplies to make this cute skirt for your little one. Just think how fun it would be to ring in spring with a cute twirly skirt! I just figured out how to add the option to choose a fat quarter on each fabric listed, so you can browse the fabrics and pick out the coordinates you need and then just add the FQ option to your cart. This skirt uses just 4 FQs so for about the cost of one yard of fabric, you'll be able to make an adorable skirt! You might notice that the price of a fat quarter is a little more than just a 1/4 yard cut of fabric. There is a reason for that. First of all, it requires us to cut a 1/2 yard from the bolt and then cut that fabric in half, so we end up with a "stray" fat quarter. Also, these are not coming pre cut from the manufacturer so we've had to had a tiny bit in for the time it takes to cut the fabric. A typical fat quarter is 18"x22" and you'll probably have some pieces left over for future small projects. Maybe even enough to make coordinating hair bows or applique a top! Crafty Girls Workshop Webstore is Now Open for Business!!

Here it is, all in it's shiny newness. This has been a work in progress for several weeks and I'm so proud to say that our new website is now up and running! (Click the picture to visit the shop!)The address is:

I hope you'll add us to your favorites, bookmarks, list of shops to visit and come by often! Our Etsy store is still alive and well, but we will be phasing out listing everything in both shops (can you imagine? That's twice the work!) We want to focus the Etsy shop on a place to sell our shop samples. One of the best things about this new web store is that we can provide you, our customers, with the opportunity to purchase multiple yards (more than 5 at a time) without having to do a lot of back and forth communication. Don't get us wrong though, we LOVE to communicate, and there is a way to contact us through the website. But we know that sometimes with time zone differences, it can be difficult to wait for a response from us about setting up a custom listing with a certain yardage amount. Now you can easily just choose whatever amount you'd like and just add it to your cart! You can even purchase as little as 1/2 yard cut, just use .5 in the quantity box. Love for Haiti, a Quilt Auction

The Crafty Girls were, of course, very touched by the tragedy in Haiti. We both reacted in our own ways. I, being the techy-girl that I am reached out to people through this blog and by commenting on other blogs and found out about Craft Hope for Haiti. Then, after talking to Regina we decided to donate a tote bag to the Craft Hope for Haiti shop and amazingly, it sold within one day! Regina, being the wonderful, sweet person that she is, decided to make a quilt so that we could try auctioning it off here on our blog, and send all the money to Doctors Without Borders. She made the sweetest, softest, cutest quilt and if I had a baby girl, I'd snatch it up before she could blink. Or at least make her make another one for me. As it turns out, she used a pattern we have in our shop and fabrics we have in our shop!! Here is a picture of the quilt:




Isn't this quilt just adorable? Regina used the Bundle Up Baby Girl quilt pattern from Cotton Way and she told me over and over how incredibly easy this pattern was! She said it was her first time doing the quilt-as-you-go method and it's very clever. The best part about this quilt, besides the soft, feminine colors of the Mill House Inn fabrics, is that it has raw edges which fray when washed so it comes out even softer and cuddly-er.

This is the back, not only is the fabric very cute, but the quilting is great!

Regina and I would like to offer this 41" x 42" baby quilt up for auction, here on our blog. I've never hosted an auction on a blog before but I've seen it done around blogland. I think the way it will work is this: I'd like to start the bidding at $75 (USD). If you'd like to bid $75, please leave a comment. Each person who'd like to bid higher to bid on this quilt, please leave another comment. You should be able to see a progression of the bidding going up throughout the comments (or that's our hope at least). And if you REALLY can't live without this quilt, please feel free to bid again. EDITED: Becky, (Lori is the one who is adopting the kids) over at Babes in Hairland really inspired me today. I don't have the ability to donate in a monetary way to children in Haiti or Doctors without Borders, but I do have an abundant stash of fabrics (part of the reason Crafty Girls Workshop was born). I dug into my stash and found something that I think could help Haiti, in a minor way. My philosophy is that if many people do one small thing, it will become one HUGE thing. Does that make sense? I think Craft Hope for Haiti is a perfect example. OK so here's the deal. I've decided that I want to offer a way to potentially reward you for commenting on Becky's blog and helping to spread the word about it. I want to give you some of my stash. It's 34 squares, precut to 5"x5", I know 34 is a strange number. It's a charm pack that I had, called Look and Learn by American Jane, I opened it and layed out the charms with the hopes of making an apron, but then put them away and changed my mind. I know I started with 40 charms, but I only have 34 left, I believe I may have made them into pin cushions for a giveaway awhile back. But still, 34 should be plenty to make an apron or a tote bag. I also want to include 1 yard of coordinating fabric from the same line. This fabric is NOT readily available to fabric stores right now. If there is any around, it is probably difficult to find. Another Sweet Moda Bakeshop Tutorial and CGW KIT

It looks like Kim Walus from Bitty Bits and Pieces (a very cute blog, by the way) has written an AWESOME tutorial to make up some adorable Valentines holders just in time for V-day! Of course this is a tute that's over on Moda Bake Shop and I was looking at the materials and it turns out Crafty Girls Workshop has EVERYTHING you need to create this cute Valentine holder for your kids (or yourself). A month or two ago, we ordered an entire bolt of Peltex and Fusible Fleece, just to get an idea of what this Peltex stuff was. It's a very stiff stabilizer that is rather tricky to work with, mostly if you're using it for lining a bag, but I think it would be perfect for the Valentine holder in the tutorial. We've also listed some GREAT ric rac that we've had for awhile and it would make a great embellishment for this exact project.

Fall-ing Prices Treasure Hunt

Oh no, I think I've created a monster! I taught Regina, the other half of Crafty Girls Workshop, how to go into our shop and edit our listings. She's also recently learned how to list new items! This is GOOD for several reasons:

• She has time to list things during the day
• LOTS of new stuff will be added almost EVERY DAY!
• It takes some of the pressure off of me to do that side of things.

BUT she is sort of sneaky, she's been going in and CHANGING prices on our products! This is GOOD for you, our wonderful customers, and well, it's GOOD for us too, because we know we're going to be getting LOTS of fabric in over the next few months and we REALLY want to sell our products. SO, I guess it's a win-win situation. You get a good deal, and we move our inventory. Remember that magazine I talked about a post or two ago called Quilts and More? Well, it turns out that just as we got ours listed, the NEW issue came out for winter! But we still have 5 copies of the FALL issue! On Thursday Regina and I will be leaving to go to the Fall Quilt Market. Do I realy need to say it? We are SO excited! I've been posting more on my personal blog, called Sew Good Sew Far, and I usually have mentioned shop updates over there as well. But I really enjoyed having a blog dedicated to the shop that I don't have to dig around to find. And I also really love knowing that at least 88 people are following my posts! So I've decided to keep this one up again, and do my best to post more often if I can. So, today's exciting news is that we've decided to do a little house cleaning before the fall starts. And by house cleaning I mean, CLEAN HOUSE because Regina's house is our shipping and receiving department and we need some room for all the NEW fabrics that are going to start arriving VERY soon. Yes, NEW fabrics, that's what I said. But before we can show those, we have to clean out some old sewing patterns and even some older fabrics that we have left over from our destash that we started in June. Please help us clean out our shop by visiting us on Etsy and viewing the items on pages 7, 8, 9, or 10. If it has the word SALE at the beginning of the listing title, it has been marked down 10%! I've put more than 40 items on sale, many for less than $5!! (Such as this, or this, or this.) Remember, we will combine as much as possible into one shipping envelope or box, so make the most of your shipping cost by purchasing multiple items! And while you're visiting, we wouldn't mind at all if you want to peruse the items on the front page that are the most recently listed fabrics that we picked up last Monday at the Moda warehouse. Yes, we made the 5 hour (each way) drive to go up to the warehouse so we could stock up on some basic solids that will coordinate nicely with the new fabrics we have coming in, as well as some prints we just couldn't say no to. As you are looking at the newer items, you might notice that the title says "YARDAGE AVAILABLE" and then the listing description says something about another website. It's true, we are expanding a little to allow you all to purchase more than just one yard, or as much as we might feel like listing, at a time. Our other site, that I like to call our sister site, is set up as an e-commerce shopping cart specifically so you can purchase yardage from the bolt! (Because who can ever just buy ONE yard?) We hope to expand it later to include more patterns and even kits, but at the moment we're trying to keep it up to date with the yardage listings as we list the fabrics on Etsy. So, please stop by and if you do decide to buy something, mention that you heard about the SALE from this blog (or from a friend who read this blog) and we'll send you an extra surprise with your order, how about that!? More Stash Fabric Listed in Shop and FREE Pattern!

Yes, it's true, we have listed A LOT more fabric in our shop. And what sorts of cute goodies could they be? Well, we have some gently used books that are instructional for various techniques such as Applique and Crazy Quilting. We also have some smaller 1/2 yard cut bundles of the Sweet fabric by Urban Chiks for Moda fabrics. That fabric is soo adorable. See?

We just listed some Snippets by American Jane. Turns out Regina had been hiding this and decided that it was time to let it go. We've cut it into 1/4 yard cut bundles, and kept the price around $15. These are not fat quarters, but they are 9 inches wide and approximately 42 inches long. This gives you a nice amount of fabric for a great deal! Here are just a few of the fabrics. Now, here is the most exiciting part, I think at least. Have you been to the Moda Bakeshop recently? It turns out that the pattern they just posted yesterday is for making an ADORABLE little tote/gift bag using, what else? Snippets! It calls for four fat quarters (18"x22") and even though our cuts aren't fat they are still a usable size for the pattern on the Bakeshop. Believe me, I checked! So I figured this must be fate. Moda offers a FREE pattern for making a totally cute little bag using the exact same fabric we are listing! So hop over to the bakeshop and get the pattern, then stop by our shop and get the fabric. You'll be able to start making your tote bags in enough time to give all your Christmas gifts in them.
